Zebra crossing near Ketton Primary School will help to improve road safety

SAFETY on a busy road has been improved thanks to a £25,000 scheme.
Rutland County Council upgraded the zebra crossing near Ketton Primary School in High Street, Ketton, to a pelican crossing during the February half-term break.
Speed indicative signs are also due to be installed.
It follows pressure from Ketton Parish Council, which has been asking for the road safety measures for many years.
Chairman of the parish council Glenis Southern said: “It is quite a busy high street with a library, a school and a shop and we only had a zebra crossing so we have been wanting that upgraded for quite some time.
“We have been talking about it for at least five years so it is good that this has finally been done.
“I think the speed indicative signs will make a big difference as it will mean motorists can see how fast they are going.
“Traffic does tend to travel faster than the speed limit.”
Mrs Southern, of Church Lane, Ketton, said it was lucky there had not been a major accident in the area.
She said: “Safety is a big concern, particularly where children are concerned and I am pleased that this work has been done.
“We are also grateful to Rutland County Council for working alongside us to carry out the work.”
Mrs Southern said the measures had “reinforced” the Stop, Look and Listen message for children at the school.
Headteacher of Ketton Primary School Amanda Rogers said she was supportive of the work that had been done.
Rutland County Council funded the work and a spokesman said the project, including design and installation, had cost £25,000.
Leader of the county council Roger Begy (Con) said: “Road safety is an important priority for the council and sometimes it’s the smaller schemes like this that can have a big impact.
“I am delighted that the new crossing seems to have been well received by the local community.”
