THE first step towards a new £2.8m hospice building was taken at a fundraising lunch.

Lady Victoria Leatham hosted the event at Fotheringay Village Hall on Friday to raise money for the new wing of the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall hospice in Peterborough.

The lunch itself raised £900 on the day, with attendees paying £10 each and also donating to take part in a raffle.

Lady Victoria hopes the lunch will be the starting point for a network of similar events to go some way towards funding the new building.

She said: “We hope it will be the launch of a £10 lunch. People gather and have lunch and pay £10 each into the pot.

“They then take the idea away with them and start their own lunch. We hope it will create a network of people holding lunches and paying £10 each. It doesn’t take a lot to get to thousands of pounds.

“Friday’s lunch was very well supported by local businesses and was extremely well attended, we couldn’t have got anyone else in.”

Lady Victoria outlined the importance of the Sue Ryder hospice, adding: “It is critical to raise money for the hospice. It is going to be used by local people and we all know what good work Sue Ryder does and how well they do it.”
