A new fundraising group based in Rutland are appealing for more volunteers to help raise vital funds which are put back into helping the local community.

The Marie Curie Rutland Fundraising Group is looking for new members to help raise money which goes towards funding the nursing of terminally ill people in Rutland.

The group which is currently made up of six volunteers, chaired by Alison Tully from Oakham, started last summer and has since been running a number of fundraising activities for Marie Curie.

Chairman Alison said: “All of the money we manage to raise stays in Rutland and goes towards caring for terminally ill people in the area.

“We need more volunteers to help raise even more money for the charity. There are lots of things that we want to do as a group but we just don’t have enough volunteers to be able to carry it out.”

The group is hoping to double its volunteer numbers in time for the Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal in March, when the volunteers will take part in a number of street collections.

Alison added: “All the volunteers have day jobs, we do this in our spare time. Anyone can come along and get involved in what we do, even if it’s just an hour a week or a one off fundraising event - we are really happy to take whatever help we can get.”

Along with organising fundraising activities as a group, the volunteers also take on their own personal challenges, including Lisa Prior, from Oakham who will be taking part in the Swimathon 2015 in April.

Lisa is a new member of the group and will dive into the world’s biggest fundraising swim in aid of Marie Curie, which is taking place at Catmose Sports Centre on April 19.

Held over the weekend of April 17 and 19, Swimathon 2015 is expecting thousands of swimmers across the country to take on the challenge in aid of the charity.

The Marie Curie Rutland Fundraising Group is encouraging people to get involved and register for a 1.5, 2.5 or 5k swim.

To register for the Swimathon visit www.swimathon.org or call 0845 36700 36.
