A MYSTERY thistle has sprung up alongside one of Rutland’s busiest roads.

Colin Brown was driving along the A606 between Whitwell and Oakham when he spotted the plant growing near to the crossroads at Barnsdale.

Mr Brown, 68, of Schofield Road, Oakham, said: “I have never seen a thistle grow to this size before. I have been through my books and found the highest thistle event recorded in Britain was three feet tall but this one is at least eight.

“It is very unusual but definitely has thistle heads on it. I just wondered whether anyone knows what it is.”

Mr Brown’s friend Fred Shorrock, who is 5ft 10ins tall, is pictured next to the plant.
