A new knitting club is having to change venues due to an overwhelming turnout from people at its first meeting.
The Oakham Knit and Natter Club held its first meeting in a reference room at Rutland County Library on October 4, but members will now meet at Oakham Castle due to its unexpected popularity.
The club was set up by former Oakham mayor Coun Joyce Lucas.
She said: “I was quite surprised at the turnout and the interest has been overwhelming.
“I thought we would get between six and 10 people turn up but we had 26. The room only holds 12 so it was quite a squeeze. We even had people saying they couldn’t attend today but can they come to the next one.
“It’s been lovely getting to know people. The ladies arrived with bundles of knitting and plenty of enthusiasm and it was great to see.”
The group has been given a large donation of wool by Oakham clothing repair shop Altered Images, which it received from clothes shop Lands’ End. Members will now make coats for dogs at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. Joyce added: “It’s a very generous donation from both Altered Images and Lands’ End. I’ve got wool coming out of my ears now.”
The second meeting is being held on Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm at Oakham Castle. For more information or to join, call Joyce on 01572 755718.
