The funeral service for George Lee, of Uffington Road, Barnack, took place at St John the Baptist Church, Barnack, the Rev David Mayler officiating. Organist was Elizabeth Snowball.

Donations were made to the British Heart Foundation.

The coffin was draped in the Union flag, on top was his parachute regiment beret and a single rose from his wife, Irene. The coffin was met by the Standards from Stamford and Barnack British Legion, followed by a guard of honour. Interment in the churchyard followed.

Born in Stamford to George and Gertrude Lee, he was educated at Casterton CE school and St Michael’s School, Stamford.

The eldest son he is survived by his eight siblings.

He worked within the construction industry for most of his life and worked for Archie Ireson, Billy Brick and Bowmans.

He later had his own painting and decorating business until ill-health forced him to retire
early. When he was old enough he joined the war effort enlisting in the 2nd South Staffs 1st Airbourne Parachute Regiment.

He was wounded during this period sustaining shrapnel injuries and a gunshot wound. During his time in the army he married his first wife Gladys and they had a son called Tony, who sadly died in 2009.

He then went on to marry twice more, marrying his widow Irene in 1972. He adopted Irene’s four children and had his own daughter Georgina in 1973.

His interests included fishing, wildlife and breeding birds, later becoming a judge at several local bird
clubs. He passed on his knowledge of fishing and wildlife to his family and later his grandchildren.

He enjoyed the music of Johann Strauss, especially the Blue Danube. He enjoyed listening to trumpeter John Barker who used to play in Stamford on Fridays and his version of requiem for a soldier was played when George was carried into church, by two of his grandsons, sons and both his son in laws.

At his funeral was the youngest member of his family, his six week old great granddaughter Emmie-Lee Ryder who sadly he did not get to see. Most of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren attended the funeral, all with memories of him showing them how to make rabbit nets or fishing.

He was a well-known face around Stamford, usually with a smile on his face and sweets in his pockets, telling people to have a couple for later, which several people remember him fondly
for.
