Obituary: Edith Steele

Edith Steele

THE funeral service for Edith (Bette) Steele, of Emlyn Gardens, Stamford, took place at All Saints’ Church, Stamford, the Rev Mark Warrick officiating.

Bette died at her home, aged 72.

She was born in Birmingham and was the daughter of the late Ted and Edith Steele and sister to the late John Steele and Ellen Farmer.

Bette spent her early school years at a convent school for girls in Preston, returning to be with the family during school holidays, as they were travelling showmen. Eventually the family settled in Stamford and she finished her education at the Fane School, Stamford. During her working life she had several jobs, including working at Rutland Water while under construction, Casseloids of Stamford and Firths of Bourne, before taking on a carer role with Stamford Home Care Services, which took her up to her retirement.

An avid bingo player from an early age, she often travelled to other towns to play, but most memorably locally at Lansbury Hall (now Newage Social Club) and Central on Broad Street, Stamford.

During retirement Bette enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

A much loved mother and grandmother, she will be sadly missed by all the family and always in their thoughts.
