John Core

THE funeral service for John (Jack) Core, of Brooke Road, Braunston, took place at Braunston Parish Church, the Rev Jay Ridley officiating. Roland Meadows was organist.

Mr Core died at home, aged 89.

Born in Braunston to the late George and Elsie Core, of High Street, he was educated at the village school and Oakham Secondary School.

On leaving school he worked for Mr Simpson, builders, and then went on to work as a fireman on the trains in Peterborough, where his brother also worked.

He served with the Royal Navy from 1930 to 1947, with many other village boys, and they were called the Nanty Gang from Braunston. Jack saw action in the North Sea serving on HMS Cloxsinia and HMS Alysinia, escorting convoys. He then moved on medical grounds to serve in the Mediterranean Sea on HMS Meteor, with another ship HMS Lookout.

In 1942 he was on patrol when his ship attacked three German ships, laying mines. They sank two and picked up 125 German sailors from the water.

On leaving the Navy, he became a railway signalman, working between Melton and Corby, and was often in the signal box at the main crossing in Oakham.

He married Phyllis in 1952, in Braunston Church, where he had been christened and confirmed. They moved to Brooke Road in 1955 where they have lived ever since.

He enjoyed sport and when he was younger played cricket for Braunston, football and tennis teams (tennis was played at the vicarage tennis courts in the village).

He also played darts for both village pubs.

He loved watching nature and gardening programmes on TV and on most Sunday, when fit, would walk around Brooke and admire the beautiful countryside.

A lovely man, he will be sadly missed.
