Kenneth York

MORE than 90 mourners attended the funeral of Kenneth York, at Marholm Crematorium, a sign of the great esteem in which he was thought of among family, friends and members of the Royal British Legion. Minister Martin Brebner officiated and Sarah Wheeler, Mr York’s granddaughter, read a tribute, The Gardener’s Hymn was sung to honour his gardening skills.

Mr York, of Baston Road, Greatford, died at the Van Geest Unit, Stamford Hospital, aged 83.

Born in North Luffenham, he attended Oakham School and worked as a civil engineer for Stamford Construction for 37 years.

He served with the Army from 1945 - 1948.

A member of the Royal British Legion, he was a poppy seller in Greatford. He had a love of birds, breeding aviary birds and also feeding wild birds. A keen gardener, he attended other people’s gardens until his 83rd year. He also enjoyed holidays at home and abroad with his wife Brenda.
