Obituary: Norman Lowson

Norman Lowson

THERE was standing room only in Tinwell Church for the memorial service for Norman Lowson, of Sutherland Way, Stamford. This was testament to his long life which touched so many people.

Mr Lowson, who died in Peterborough Hospital, aged 87, was head of Ketton Primary School for more than 35 years. It was especially moving to see so many of his former pupils and staff present at the service. The current head, Amanda Rogers, representing the governing body and the school, spoke warmly of the many memories and the legacy he had left to the children of the village.

The Rev Jo Saunders officiated assisted by the Rev Malcolm Saunders.

During the Second World War Mr Lowson served in North Africa.

He loved gardening, and gave his immense knowledge freely to anyone who asked, especially about tomatoes. Such was his fondness for this fruit that he was known as the ‘tomato man’ by visitors and workers at the local nursery he spent a day a week at for more than 20 years. He was also a member of Stamford Probus Club for many years.

Betty, Norman’s wife, died at Thorpe Hall a few years ago and it was the quality of care that she received there that convinced Norman to raise money for the hospice.

He took some of Betty’s Beanie Babies each month for sale in the shop, which earned him the sobriquet ‘Beanie man’. He also sold plants from his front garden to passers-by, many of whom became friends as well as regular customers over the years. His homemade ‘totaliser’ was reminiscent of early “It’s a Knockout’ but it kept pedestrians aware of the money his plants had raised for the hospice over several years.

As well as a cultivator of young minds and plants he also, in some ways, cultivated souls. For more than 50 years he acted as a reader for the Church of England, taking services and offering solace, wisdom and advice throughout his time in local churches, especially Tinwell.

Bereaved are his children Susan, Paul, Nigel and Amanda.
