THE funeral service for Winifred (Rene) Sumpter, of Bainton, took place at St Mary’s Church, Bainton, the Rev John Wilson officiating. Miss Elizabeth Snowball was organist.
Rene died at Peterborough City Hospital, aged 90, after a short illness.
Born in Bainton in 1920, the daughter of Fred Sumpter and Ruth, Rene lived with her mother and subsequently by herself the whole of her 90 years, at Tallington Road, Bainton. She was educated at Bainton School until the age of 14, when she joined her aunt, Nellie Plowright, at the home of Mr and Mrs Cecil Plant at Lolham Mill, as nanny and housekeeper, where she remained for 42 years.
As well as assisting the raising of 11 children, she helped in every aspect of farm life. After the death of Mr and Mrs Plant and Lolham Mill being sold, Rene spent the rest of her working life with Browns florists at High Street, Stamford, where she became an expert on horticultural matters. She took a keen interest in Bainton village life, was on Bainton Parochial Church Council and a regular church worshipper.
Her knowledge of local history was quite remarkable and sought by authors and historians.
On retirement she travelled widely, visiting Europe and much of the USA and latterly enjoyed days out with the family she had cared for, especially enjoying trips to North Norfolk.
Rene was a special lady and will be missed more than she will ever know.
