Crowds are set to be treated to a masterclass in sailing from a gold medal winning Olympian at a club’s open day this weekend.
Paul Goodison MBE will be at Rutland Sailing Club’s free annual event at Rutland Water, which starts at 10am tomorrow (Saturday).
The day is part of the Volvo Sailing Academy initiative, which is a series of free, family-friendly sailing and power kiting experiences to introduce beginners, youngsters, adults and families, to the sport.
Paul, who won the gold medal in the 2008 Olympic Men’s Laser class, will be on hand to show novices the ropes throughout the open day at the club at Gibbet Lane, Edith Weston.
Paul said: “Sailing is a fantastic sport and is fun for the whole family.
“We want as many people as possible who have never sailed before to take advantage of our try sailing day.
“Hopefully, we’ll discover a future Olympic medallist in the process.”
The club’s fully trained instructors will also provide expert tuition to beginners and five one-hour land-based power kiting taster sessions will also be held with world record breaker Sam Lutman-Pauc and instructor Dom Moore.
As well as sailing, there will be a host of other activities to keep families entertained including test drives of the Volvo range.
Daniel Cooper, who is dealer principal at Volvo Marshall Peterborough, said: “The Volvo Sailing Academy offers a brilliant opportunity for anyone who has never tried the sport before to have a go.
“I think people do consider sailing to be an exclusive sport which requires a high investment but nothing could be further from the truth.
“We hope the event will encourage landlubbers to take to the water and discover a truly exhilarating and enjoyable pastime which can help keep the entire family fit and healthy.”
