A VILLAGER is hoping that a book of poetry will help to raise £8,000 for a new church bell.

Frank Wyer, 81, has written a second volume of Thoughts and Poems of A Layman to raise money for St Mary and All Saints’ Church, Kirkby Underwood.

Mr Wyer would like to buy a fourth bell for the church. His first book has so far raised about £300.

His family has a strong tradition of bell ringing at the church. One bell, which dates back to 1694, has the Wyer name on it.

Mr Wyer, of Stainfield Road, Kirkby Underwood, has been ringing bells at the church since 1945. He has written poems about a range of subjects including church life and religion. Mr Wyer said: “When a poem comes to mind I have to write it down.

The book costs £5.99 and is available from Walkers Books, in North Street, Bourne. It is also on sale at Morton Post Office.
