A COUNCILLOR visited Moldova to promote democracy in Eastern Europe.

Coun Ashley Baxter, who sits on Deeping St James Parish Council and Market Deeping Town Council, was picked by the Green Party of England and Wales to visit Moldova as part of a project co-ordinated by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.

The visit involved meetings with activists from the Green Party’s sister parties in both Moldova and neighbouring Romania to compare campaigning techniques and issues of common concern.

Coun Baxter, who is the chairman of the East Midlands Green Party, also took park in a radio discussion and attended a political demonstration.

He said: “Moldova faces many of the same issues as the UK, but from a different direction.

“These include a love-hate relationship with the EU, a coalition government and of course we all share the urgent problems of climate change.”

Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe and is not currently a member of the EU.
