Nick Boles was in Stamford on Saturday to launch his campaign for free parking.
The Stamford and Bourne MP has set up an online petition and hopes to persuade South Kesteven District Council to offer two hours’ free parking in its car parks.
Mr Boles said: “There has been a very strong response.”
He added: “What I want to keep up is the principal that we need to make shopping in the town as attractive as the competition of online and out-of-town retail.
“It is an economic scheme, it has a one-off cost that is relatively manageable.
“It’s a scheme that has a great deal of support among residents, business owners and operators in the town.”
