Half a million pounds will be spent upgrading sports facilities in Rutland.

Sport England has approved the grant which will be spent on redeveloping the old prison sports hall at Oakham Enterprise Park.

The facility will be known as the Active Rutland Centre and will be available for sports club to hire.

Rutland County Council hopes groups which currently meet at the former Rutland College site in Barleythorpe Hall, Oakham, will relocate to the site.

There will also be an improved artificial grass pitch.

Deputy leader of the council Terry King (Con) said: “I’m delighted that Sport England agreed to support our plans for improving sports facilities locally. The new Active Rutland Centre will provide much needed floor space for local clubs and meet the needs of our growing population.”

Work is expected to start in June and be completed by the end of October.
