Tributes have been paid to a Rutland county councillor with a “passion for rural issues”.
Brian Montgomery, who represented the Whissendine ward, died this weekend. Mr Montgomery served as chairman of the council from 1986 to 1988 and again from 1995 to 1997, and was most recently elected in 2008.
Council leader Roger Begy (Con) said: “It was Brian who persuaded me to put my name forward to be a Councillor way back in 1995. He was one of the leaders of the campaign for Rutland independence and raised the Rutland flag as Chairman.
“Brian has served Rutland for many years and he will be greatly missed. His passion for rural issues, particularly through his work with the Campaign to Protect Rural England, has made a huge contribution to life in the county as we know it.”
