AN air force officer was one of eight servicemen and women who welcomed the British Olympic team to their accommodation for the next month.

Flying officer Mark Baron, 46, from Stamford, hoisted the Olympic flag as Team GB members arrived at the Olympic Athletes Village in London.

The ceremony, led by Dame Tessa Jowell, included entertainment from the UK National Youth Theatre.

Flying officer Baron, who is based at RAF Wittering, said: “We’ve been here for several days now, and you can feel the anticipation building in the air. It’s been a privilege to help welcome athletes from around the world but we felt incredibly proud to take part in the special greeting for Team GB. The atmosphere was electric.”
