Candidates for the Rutland and Melton seat at next month’s General Election will take to the stage at Oakham School tomorrow night (Tuesday) to debate their views.

Sir Alan Duncan (Conservative), James Moore (Labour), Ed Reynolds (Liberal Democrat) and Richard Billington (UKIP) will get a minute to introduce themselves before the discussion begins, with answers limited to 60 seconds each.

Gigi Florentin-Lee, an economics and politics teacher at Oakham School, said: “Not only will it provide students with an opportunity to hear the views of the candidates and their parties, it also allows the chance for them to really engage with politics, first-hand, rather than just watching it from afar.”

As well as being a very active politics department, having hosted both a hustings and a Mock Election during previous elections, Politics at Oakham School is well-regarded and has a strong reputation in political debating, with students regularly traveling across the world to attend Model United Nations conferences.

For the past few years, Oakham’s politics students have had the honour of being the only UK school pupils to be selected by the British Council to represent the UK as MEPs for the day, at the Euroscola conference held at the European Parliament.

The school is also one of few schools across the world that has been chosen to pilot the new IB global politics course.
