A BOTTLE of champagne was smashed over the tractor breaking ground at the new Rutland Retreats site.

The work at Barnsdale Lodge is a £2.5m project to build 17 holiday retreats.

Managing director Ed Burrows secured planning permission for the site off Barnsdale Avenue and the A606 three years ago.

All the buildings will be built out of sustainable timber and have grass roofs.

Mr Burrows said: “We will be planting the site with indigenous plants and trees and I have consulted with Nick Hamilton from Barnsdale Gardens on this.”

Mr Burrows hopes to finish the buildings within 12 months.

It will create seven new jobs at Barnsdale Lodge.
