SUPPORTERS of the armed forces gathered in Oakham town centre on Wednesday for the sixth annual Beating the Retreat event.

Minden Band The Queen’s Division performed the honour this year in Market Place, Oakham, to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Among the numbers played were traditional military marches, James Bond themes, the theme tune to Black Adder and the National Anthem.

Among the 300 people watching was the president of ABF The Soldiers’Charity, Jennifer Gretton.

An address was made by Lord Liutenant of Rutland Laurence Howard before the music started.

Afterwards a reception was held in Oakham Castle. Organiser Paul Beech said: “We try to make it bigger and better every year and have succeeded again this year.

“16 Regiment from St George’s Barracks were there again this year and were a fantastic support as usual.

“We usually raise about £3,000 and are hoping for that again this year.

“As always, it was a happy occasion.”
