THE secretary of the Stamford Mercury Archives Trust has thanked a man who donated a rare 300-year- old newspaper.

Michael Gibson, 62, of Sutton in Norfolk, presented the gift to the trust last week.

The September 7, 1732, edition, headed Howgrave’s Stamford Mercury after printer Francis Howgrave, was passed down through three generations of Mr Gibson’s family.

Trust secretary John Smith said: “The paper is unique. We are very lucky to have been given such a valuable and rare addition to the archive.

“As far as I am aware, there is only one other copy of this edition in existence. It’s a very special and unique gift.

“It’s in beautiful condition.

“The paper has clearly been very well looked after for more than two centuries.

“The archive only contains two other editions from 1732, which makes this gift incredibly valuable to us.

“It is a very generous gift and we are grateful to Mr Gibson.”
