AN AWARD-winning five-star guesthouse has closed owing to the retirement of the proprietors.

Philip and Jane Sagar have run the Rock Lodge Town House in Empingham road, Stamford, for the past 10 years and have now decided to retire.

Philip said: “After 10 successful years we have decided to take it a bit easier and I will concentrate on my hotel and leisure consultancy business, Innpro.co.uk, that is busier than ever due to the difficult market conditions many operators find themselves in,.”

The couple came to Stamford in 2001 after 25 years with Swallow Hotels.

They were involved in the opening of the five-star Swallow Hotel (now the Marriott) in Peterborough in 1988 before moving onto the company’s flagship £42m Royal Hotel in Bristol in 1994, where Philip was also area director for the south west of England.

They have sold Rock Lodge and move out next week to a new home in Tallington. They also hope to spend more time at their second home in Spain.
