TWO youth rugby teams need your votes to win a day training with the England squad.

Stamford Rugby Club under-12s and Oundle RFC under-16s have made it to the final 50 of the AEG Grassroots competition.

They have already been rewarded for getting this far, with both teams receiving 22 bespoke Samurai kits and a top-of-the-range AEG 9 series washing machine and tumble dryer each.

To get this far teams had to say in 50 words why they deserved the new kits. But they now need votes to be in with a chance of training with Martin Johnson’s England team at Twickenham.

Mark Anderson, one of the Stamford under-12s coaches, praised the club as a whole and said his team deserved the chance to train with England.

He said: “The team has really been quite successful and the club is going from strength to strength.

“The seniors were promoted, we have four senior sides and all sorts of junior groups. The under-12s got voted the most successful team within the club last season.

“To win and train with the England squad would be pretty awesome, it would top things off.”

Mark said the benefits of rugby to youngsters in the town were clear.

He added: “Rugby is an opportunity for children to explore themselves. There is a position for everyone and is a great way of learning self restraint and having fun.

“We have the best part of 200 kids training on a Sunday, all having a great time. The boys deserve it for the effort they have put in.”

Director of coaching at Oundle RFC, Peter Croot, works with the under-16s, 17s and 18s at the club.

Peter said the team entered the competition to give their kit man Geoff Wickes a helping hand. He said: “Anybody who has played at Oundle knows how muddy it gets. Geoff’s washing machine was on its last legs.

“The lads are much more together as a team now which is excellent. The kit is fantastic. The team play in the right way and they would be good ambassadors to meet the team and show how good junior rugby can be.”

Voters can win a holiday for four to the five star Forte Village Resort in Sardinia.
