The owners of a laundry that was hit by fire have thanked the community for its support during the eight months the premises were closed.

Terry and Mandy Black will reopen their shop, Rutland Laundry, on Monday after a fire in April destroyed most of their equipment and machinery.

The blaze was caused by tea towels overheating in a tumble dryer and the shop in Melton Road had to be closed.

But Oakham School kindly stepped in to help by offering the couple its in-house laundry facilities to allow them to continue serving customers.

Rutland Building Services also helped by putting up a portable building behind the laundry in Melton Road for the couple to use.

Terry was overwhelmed by the support and is looking forward to opening next week.

He said: “It’s been a tough eight months for us but now we can’t wait to get going.

“The offer we had from Oakham School was invaluable. If it hadn’t been for the school and Rutland Building Services, we wouldn’t still be here.

“Oakham School’s kind offer went a long way to keeping our customers happy and this kept us afloat.

“Rutland Building Services also gave us a lot of help and support through the closure and our refitted shop looks fantastic.

“Our customers have also been very supportive. We cannot thank people enough for what they’ve done for us.

“We’re just putting the last few bits in place, then we’ll be ready to go.”

All eight washing machines and six tumble dryers at the shop have been replaced. The dry cleaner has been refurbished and is ready for use.

Annika Hedrich-Wiggans, bursar at Oakham School, got in contact with the laundry owners to offer help as soon as she heard about the fire.

She said: “We are all keen to see our local independent businesses survive, especially during the current economic climate.

“It seemed an obvious opportunity for Oakham School to help as our own in-house laundry contains machines similar to those that Mandy and Terry use. It has been a pleasure to do our little bit to help them.”

The shop will reopen on Monday at 9am and will be open Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 5pm. For more information, call the laundry on 01572 756927.
