Two slimmers are hoping to inspire other people to lose weight after they succeeded in their own battles to beat the bulge.

Suzie Dodd, of Beaufort Avenue, Market Deeping, piled on the pounds during four years of personal tragedy before she was inspired to turn her life around.

She began comfort eating when she was diagnosed with a rare spine condition which left her paralysed from the waist down and forced her to learn to walk again.

She continued to use food as a pick-me-up when her partner Barry Whelan died of a heart attack at the age of 46 in 2009 and continued to overeat when she was later diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Suzie, 40, said: “It was a dark time for me. I was unhappy and food soon became my crutch for support, causing me to gain three stone in weight.”

It was only when Suzie met her husband Mark through an online dating agency that she decided to address her weight problem.

After joining a Slimming World class in Market Deeping she lost 3st and has now decided to launch her own group to help other people in her situation.

Suzie, a shop assistant, said: “The support the group gave me helped me along the way. I feel amazing now and so full of energy. I feel I can start living again.

“I was so pleased with the transformation that I wanted to help other people feel like this so I’ve decided to become a Slimming World consultant.”

Suzie is re-launching the Tuesday evening Slimming World group at Stamford Free Church in Kesteven Road in September. A new group will also launch in Ketton after another slimmer was inspired to help others.

Angie Fereday, of Station Road, Deeping St James, has lost two stone following the Slimming World plan.

Her weight-loss journey began when she returned to work following the birth of her second child.

Angie, 42, who works as a nurse said: “I was so excited as I met my manager and tried on my new uniform, but when I went to try the trousers on I could barely pull them up, let alone do the button up.

“I told my manager they were fine, but deep inside I was mortified and felt so embarrassed to have got so big.”

Angie also joined a Slimming World class in Crowland. She lost two stone and met Suzie at an interview to become a Slimming World consultant.

She said: “Between us we have lost five stone and feel fabulous. It seems unthinkable that by eating loads of food, including potatoes, that we have lost nearly three sacks of spuds between us.

“We hope that by opening up a new group in Ketton and re-launching the Tuesday group in Stamford we can help people like ourselves who want to lose weight.”

The Ketton group will launch on Monday, September 2 at the Methodist Church Hall at 7.30pm. For details call Angie on 07990 727976.

Suzie will take over the Stamford group on Tuesday, September 3 at 7.30pm. Call 07920 805708 for more information.
