THE world’s loudest-purring cat wowed bookshop customers at a signing on Saturday.

Smokey and her owner Ruth Adams, from Northampton, were at Walkers Bookshop in High Street, Stamford, on Saturday to sign copies of their book Smokey The Very Loud Purring Cat.

A steady stream of cat-lovers were able to meet Smokey and hear her purr, which has been measured at 67.7 decibels - 14 times louder than the average cat’s purr.

Owner Ruth said: “People loved her, they couldn’t believe how relaxed she was.

“She was happy to let children stroke her and she purred a lot. People said they could hear her downstairs.”

Smokey and Ruth are currently on a tour of the Midlands with their book and are enjoying the extra publicity.

Ruth added: “Smokey has been very happy when I bring the cat basked out, I think she knows she gets fed a lot of little treats when she goes out.”

Smokey intitially rose to fame promoting a spaying and neutering campaign for the Cats Protection charity.

The book signing was organised by Stamford-based Your Cat magazine.

The book can be bought from www.smokeythepurringcat.com and Smokey herself is on Twitter @PurringSmokey.
