YOUNG athletes from St Gilbert’s School, Stamford have been showing off their medals after winning the Lincolnshire Indoor Athletics Championships for Primary Schools.

Twenty Year 5 and 6 children competed against other regional finalists in the final of the competition at the Meres Leisure Centre, Grantham on March 9.

Head teacher Claire Thorley said it was a first for the school, although they did come third last year.

“We are really proud of the children - they worked really hard to get there,” she said.

The youngsters were coached by classroom assistant Sarah Dickson and cheered on by parent supporters.

Mrs Dickson said the children were amazing. “It was simply breathtaking to watch them,” she said.

She named as outstanding Max Lindley, squad captain, who won the vertical jump, the standing triple jump and his sprint events, Luke Taylor who won the javelin and helped win the 4x1 and the girls’ relay team - Hannah Lowe, Katie Webster, Hali Plant and Lily Lewis-Gorman.
