A RECORD crowd turned out for the 50th anniversary of a flower show.

Stamford and District Horticultural Society’s half century celebration was held at the United Reformed Church and St Augustine Church halls on Saturday.

More than 400 entries were submitted including dahlias, orchids, vegetables, cookery, photography, arts and crafts.

An inter-society section was staged for the first time, which attracted five local entries.

Refreshments were provided in both halls and entertainment was provided by Laura Collins and Greg Clarke.

Horticultural society deputy chairman Max Winslow said: “It was pleasing that there were a number of entries from young schoolchildren and novice growers.

“The entries of Mrs J Measures, who won the novice dahlia section, were particularly noteworthy.”

Society chairman Sue Lee thanked the judges and helpers, and the participants who had provided such interesting and attractive exhibits.

She also thanked Mrs G Parsley, Belvoir Bakery, Burghley House, Garden News, Gates’ Nursery and Garden Centre, The George Hotel, Rassells’ Nursery, Morrisons, Waterside Garden Centre and Wilkinsons who provided prizes or sponsorship.
