SHOPS in Oakham are expected to be open on Sunday as part of a trial scheme to boost business.
Shopkeepers are being encouraged to extend their trading hours by Oakham Town Partnership in a bid to attract visitors to the town on Sundays.
There will also be a number of other attractions going on during the day, including a car boot sale at Burley Road car park at 9am, followed by activities at Cutts Close, starting at midday.
The free event, titled Summer Fun, will feature a barbecue, penalty shoot out, Zorbing, live music, beach activities, a bike workshop and much more.
The event has been sponsored and supported by Catmose Sports, Spire Homes, Oakham Town Council and Oakham Town Partnership.
Alf Dewis, chairman of the partnership, said: “We see Oakham not just as a place to shop but also as a place where both local people and visitors enjoy being in a town that provides a rich mix of activities including entertainment as well as shopping.
“We hope that the people of Oakham will support us and turn out on the day.”
The Sunday opening initiative gained a positive response at meetings earlier this year. At present very few shops in the town open on Sundays.
