A swimming teacher has recently returned from a 12-day trip to Bulembu in Swaziland, Africa where she taught the children in the town to swim.

Lisa Ryan, who has worked as a swimming teacher for 24 years, and is based at Stamford Leisure Pool in Drift Road, joined a campaign by Kingsgate Church in Peterborough to regenerate a former mining town.

The town was purchased in 2006 and put into trust with the Swazi charity Bulembu Ministries Swaziland, which has been working towards creating a self-sustaining community since then.

Lisa said: “I was so excited to be a part of this amazing trip. It was a privilege to meet the children of Bulembu, many of whom were orphans and welcomed me with open arms.

“The children were very eager to learn to swim and while some struggled at first, they grew confident very quickly.”

Lisa said it was heartbreaking to leave but hopes to return soon and added: “The work being done in Bulembu is inspiring and I enjoyed every minute of it.”
