A popular Turkish restaurant in Stamford has changed its name to avoid a “massive legal battle”.

The Fat Turk, in St Paul’s Street, will now be known as The Mad Turk.

The restaurant was opened by Ertunch and Shelly Kazim in February this year.

A few months later an Essex restaurant called The Fat Turk started a legal challenge.

Even though it was 83 miles away in Ongar its owners said their business was being affected.

Shelly said: “The judge has not decided on the case but we’ve decide to change the name.

“It has been very stressful and it would have been a massive legal battle to keep the name. So we decided rather than waste our time and energy fighting this we will concentrate on providing our customers with good food.”

The couple now plan to expand the business and hope to open for lunch on Fridays and Saturdays, starting in October.

They also plan to refurbish the first floor living accommodation to double the covers with another 34 seats.
