A town centre level crossing was closed for several hours after a lorry crashed into it.

One of the barriers at the crossing in Melton Road, Oakham, was damaged at about 7pm last night (Monday). A lorry crashed into it, crumpling the metal.

Police closed the road and traffic was diverted while the barrier was repaired. It reopened to drivers at 1.40am morning (Tuesday).

British Transport Police are investigating. A spokesman said: ““We were called to Oakham level crossing just after 7pm on Monday after a report of a vehicle striking the automatic barriers.

“Colleagues from Leicestershire Police and Network Rail also attended, and found that extensive damage had been caused.

“Trains were stopped for a short time while officers removed the damaged barriers from the line.

“The vehicle involved is believed to be a lorry and enquiries are currently ongoing to trace it.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any other information, is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting incident reference 444 of September 29.
