A 23-year-old man had to be airlifted to hospital after his car hit a skip and ended up in a canal.

Emergency services were called to Ashwell Road, near the Oakham Enterprise Park, at about 8am yesterday (Sunday). A black Ford Fiesta had crashed into a skip and ended up in a stream with the driver trapped inside.

The man was freed from his car and was treated by East Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics. He had severe head and abdominal injuries and was anaesthetised at the scene by a Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance doctor before being airlifted to University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire for further treatment.

He remains in a critical condition.

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to the incident to help with their inquiries.

Det Con Ady Keeble, the investigating officer, said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have information relating to this incident to contact us.

“A local resident recalls hearing a loud bang at 3.30am that morning.

“Were you travelling along Ashwell Road at about that time? Do you recall seeing the vehicle being driven beforehand or the incident itself?”

Oakham fire station watch manager Mark Draper, who attended the rescue, said: “The car appeared to have lost control, hit the skip and ended up in the stream.

“When we arrived the back of the car was in the water and the front was facing upwards up the embankment.

“The driver was in a very unconformable position and looked like he had received some heavy injuries to his head. He was barely responding to us.

“We removed the roof of the car and got him out safely and handed him over to the paramedics.

“I think he could’ve been down there for some time.”

Those with information should call Det Con 506 Ady Keeble on 101, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer’s identification number 0506.

The reference number for the incident is LEP-020214-0148.

The road was closed between Rutland Garden Centre and the Burley Road roundabout for several hours.
