There were long delays on the A1 at Stibbington after a two crashes within metres of each other.
Two lorries and two cars collided on the southbound carriageway just before 5.15pm yesterday (Tuesday).
The crashes happened near the junction with Stibbington on the southbound carriageway, leaving two people with minor injuries.
The first incident involved two lorries and moments later a Porsche and a Vauxhall Vectra crashed. The Porsche suffered major damage, while the Vauxhall was left on the side of the road.
Drivers were delayed for more than two hours, with queues stetching back to Wansford.
But police were able to keep the outside lane open while the recovery operation took place.
Firefighters had to use specialist cutting equipment to release casualties from their vehicles.
The road was eventually cleared by 7.45pm.
The road surface had been wet following heavy rain.
The police spokesman said: “We would always encourage people to be aware of the road conditions, and drive appropriately.”
Investigators are now trying to piece together what happened to cause the two crashes.
Anyone who witnessed the collisions is asked to call police on 101.
