Crowds of people packed into Oakham Castle on Friday for the inauguration ceremony for the new High Sheriff of Rutland.

Trish Ruddle was sworn into the role, taking over from Bart Hellyer.

Trish, who lives in Langham, becomes the eighth woman to be given the title of High Sheriff of Rutland and is the second in her family after her father-in-law George Ruddle held the role in 1938.

Speaking at the ceremony, Trish said: “I feel so privileged to have been appointed High Sheriff of this very special county. I’m very proud to follow a family tradition and I’m really looking forward to learning more about Rutland.”

Trish is a volunteer for Rutland Macmillan Cancer Support and has organised a number of events, including the annual Good As New Clothes Sale at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, raising thousands of pounds over many years. Her husband Tony was the owner of Ruddles Brewery in Oakham.

Trish praised former High Sheriff Bart Hellyer, saying he had done a “fantastic” job and will be missed by the county.
