More than 80 villagers have voiced their disapproval at a developer’s plans to convert a house into a convenience store.
Developer Landmark Planning wants to turn a semi-detached house in Luffenham Road, Ketton, into a shop with a flat above.
But villagers are against the plans as they believe it will cause problems with traffic congestion and parking and may result in the closure of the village post office, in High Street, due to the competition.
A planning application has been submitted to Rutland County Council and scores of residents have registered their objections online.
Stephen Berry, 51, whose 83-year-old father lives next to the house which could be converted, believes that the development will make the problem of parking along the road worse than it already is.
He said: “Parking is a big issue during school times and the shop is going to make things worse.
“There’s a lay-by nearby but it’s always full. I think it’s going to be dangerous. It’s already a tough job to get out of my dad’s driveway when cars are parked along the road.
“And we don’t need another shop because we’ve got the post office which has day-to-day things we need. We fear it won’t survive with the added competition.”
Ketton ward Rutland county councillor Gary Conde (Con) held a public meeting on Tuesday last week, in which more than 80 people turned out to say why they do not want the development. No residents voiced their support for the plans.
Despite the objections, Jonathan Weekes of Landmark Planning, is confident the plans will get given the go-ahead. The application includes a parking space for one car at the shop but Mr Weekes believes the majority of people will be walking or cycling to it.
He said: “It’s largely going to compliment the post office and offer different items. It’s not envisaged there be lots more traffic.”
