People gave up their free time at the weekend to help keep their village clean and tidy.

A dozen people, and Fred the dog, turned out to support the litter-pick organised by Rippingale Parish Council on Sunday.

The volunteers came back with nearly 45lb of bottles, tin cans, crisp packets – and worse.

To encourage people to take part in the community tidy up, the parish council made the exercise into a competitive event, seeing which team could pick up the most from the streets of the village

Ben Greig and his brother James won the children’s prizes for bringing back the most litter.

Both boys were given a prize of chocolate for their efforts and their mum Caroline won the adult prize.

She was presented with a bottle of wine as her prize.
