FAMILIES from across the globe gathered for a special history lesson which raised more than £8,000 for a village church.

The History of Preston Weekend was held to raise funds for Preston Church and descendants from former village residents from the US, Canada and New Zealand came to visit.

Last year, thieves removed a large portion of the lead roof on the church.

The funds raised will help pay for a replacement roof for the church and a new alarm system.

Members of the Sheild and Belgrave families attended the weekend, which included a welcome barbecue at the village hall, a guided tour of sites in Rutland, a visit to houses which their ancestors had built and lived in as far back as the 1440s, and a trip to Uppingham School. Visitors also enjoyed a special service at the church.
