A FIRST aid group is appealing for volunteers who can offer a vital helping hand in saving lives.

Wittering First Responders group is looking for new people to join to support its service in the community.

The group is a voluntary first aid response team who are called by the East of England Ambulance Service to attend emergencies.

Those who sign up will be given medical training by the ambulance service so they can attend calls, taking it in turns with other members to be on-call.

They will also carry basic first aid equipment and be taught how to use an automated external defibrillator.

After setting up nearly two years ago, the group has been dispatched to about 20 jobs so far but with more volunteers it could give a greater amount of cover.

Group co-ordinator Andy Gardener said: “We’re looking for as many volunteers as possible to come forward.

“It can be very rewarding to help people in an emergency. You are there to help save lives and there’s nothing more rewarding than that.

“Although it has been a long slog to get the group started, it’s now great to see us up and running.”
