I would like to correct my fellow correspondent TW Earl (Letters, last week) when he states that “We didn’t have a referendum to take us into the Common Market.”
We did, but what we didn’t have was a referendum to take us into the European Union. This was done on the back of the European Economic Community, or Common Market, refer-endum by stealth.
When my old “Her Britannic Majesty’s” blue passport expired, on the red cover of the renewal document, in gold lettering, was “European Economic Community”. When my wife’s passport was renewed a few years later, “Economic” had been omitted and just the words “European Community” appeared; subsequent renewals bear the words “European Union”.
I rest my case.
