The Mercury asked: “Do you support villagers in their bid to make their voices heard?” on page 13 last week.
My personal opinion is that we had that and many took it with the opportunity to object to the planning permission and to lobby Northamptonshire County Council.
When the county council rejected the planning permission there was a second opportunity to make our voices heard via an expensive public inquiry and again many took this up.
What we are being asked to do now is to pay for and hold a parish poll which in the words of its proponents “by itself, will achieve nothing”.
My parish will see an increase of 10 to 15 per cent in the parish council precept ie extra council tax that we will all have to pay, just to fund this publicity stunt.
The poll will ask our parish council to make representations against the Augean scheme, which they have consistently done through the whole planning process in any case. Quite why we need to spend money to get a vote to have them do what they are already doing without objection is beyond me.
Let’s be clear, this is just a publicity stunt by opponents of the Augean scheme. They are seeking to engineer confrontation in order to gain publicity with a view to influencing the Secretary of State.
I was in two minds about contributing to this publicity but as nine other people voted against holding a poll in our village I thought our views should be expressed in the name of true democracy.
I have no doubt the Mercury will be deluged with letters in support of the parish polls from the organised campaigners.
