Oakham.........................19 Barton..........................20
OAKHAM head coach Mark Powell blamed his side’s ill discipline and naivity after watching them surrender a 12-0 home lead over Barton to lose 20-19 with the last kick of the game.

The hosts flew out of the blocks and within five minutes captain Stimnson found himself flopping over the line after a great catch and drive from a line out.

Matthews strolled over for the second score shortly afterwards and at 12-3 at the break the Oaks looked on course for a Midlands 4 East (North) victory.

Lack of concentration resulted in the Hull side scoring the first try of the second half after sustained pressure broke the Oakham line.

Matthews bagged his second score of the game after some slick handling from the young Oaks backs allowed him to go over in the corner and convert.

But the turning point came with 15 minutes left when Barton’s inside centre fly hacked the ball into Oakham’s in goal area and out gassed the retreating defence to score.

Oakham desperately hung on to their 19-17 lead but conceded a penalty in the dying seconds which the visitors kicked with glee.

Powell said: “It was more than gutting. We played very well for ten minutes then decided we had won the game at 12-0 and completely switched off.

“Silly mistakes, charge downs, predictable passes. It was very disappointing. I’d rather lose 65-3 than suffer defeat in this manner.

“We should have been kicking the ball down the pitch in the final minute but instead we give away a silly penalty which cost us the win.

“That’s inexperience showing in a young side and the errors must be stamped out.

“We weren’t helped by a poor referee who allowed them to get away with murder but the basic errors are what ultimately cost us.”
