FIVE-star Rangers stamped their mark on the top flight of the Peterborough League by ending Alconbury's winning start to the new campaign on Saturday.
Andy Saddington's side stung their previously-unbeaten visitors with a four-goal first half blitz to make it two wins from three starts in their first-ever Premier Division campaign.

Saddington said: "Alconbury didn't play that well, but I don't want to take anything away from my lads because to score five goals against any side in the Premier Division is an achievement.

"They probably under-estimated us a little bit, but we got in their faces from the start and really closed them down which they didn't like."

Rangers' persistent play brought about their opening goal as Robbie Pearce harried the visiting right-back into a rushed clearance which was pounced upon Michael Nelson who slotted the ball past the advancing keeper.

Steve Smith then doubled Rangers' lead when he met Pearce's near-post corner with a half-volley which went through the Alconbury keeper's legs.

Pearce added the third with the goal of the game as he broke down the left before cutting in and curling an excellent finish into the bottom corner.

Rangers completed their first half scoring spree with Michael Nelson's second goal as he latched onto a through ball before finishing with aplomb.

The home side could have increased their tally during a dominant opening period as Richard Nelson had several shots from distance while Stu Lambie's 25-yard effort came back off the inside of the post.

Alconbury reduced the arrears early in the second half after a lapse in concentration in Rangers' rearguard, but Pearce soon restored the four-goal advantage when he lobbed the visiting keeper from 25 yards out.

Saddington added: "We are not getting carried away because it's all about finding our feet at this level and, even though we have won two on the trot, there might be times during the season when we lose three or four in a row.

"I just want us to pick up points where we can and make sure we don't involved in any relegation battle.

"We have got a good bunch of lads, there's a good atmosphere and everybody wants to work for each other."

Rangers: Hicks, Forbes, Munton, Saddington, Farr, Smith, Dalby, R. Nelson, Lambie, M. Nelson, Pearce. Subs: Flavell, Hollingsworth, Ward.
