Wakes raring to go

BOURNE Town are two weeks into a gruelling pre-season schedule and face their first friendly tomorrow when they take on a Boston United XI.
The Wakes management team have identified fitness towards the end of games as one of the key areas for improvement.
Joint manager John Chand told the Mercury they are working on making the club a far more professional outfit by training with the Under 18 and reserve squads to ensure the best players get opportunities in the first team.
Pre-season training is being held at Carres Grammar School, Sleaford, where the club has access to top facilities, including the most up to date artificial pitches, top changing facilities, a gym and a classroom for analysing the sessions and matches.
The Wakes will play Boston on one of the articial pitches at Carres at 3pm tomorrow.
The Abbey Lawn pitch is out of use until early August as it is undergoing an expensive renovation to ensure it is in top condition for the new Eagle Bitter UCL Premier Division campaign.
Chand said: "This season is all about stability. We came in late last season with the aim of staying up but we already knew what we wanted to do this season.
"We are putting plans in place. Everything is becoming far more professional and everyone seems to be responding very well.
"We identified fitness as an issue when we watched the side before taking over last season and that is going to be a key part of our work throughout the season. The amount of points that were dropped last season due to poor fitness late in games was unacceptable."
Training sessions are proving popular with 25 to 30 players consistently attending since the Wakes returned on June 21.
New faces are already on show with former St Albans and Boston United midfielder Dane Harper, ex Lincoln United and Boston United defensive midfielder Jack Cotton and central defender Stewart Smith, who made a handful of appearances for Bourne last season, all signed.
Chand is also hopeful of signing striker Lee Orrey who spent last season with Spalding United, while the club has been boosted by last year's player of the season Matt Holland re-signing.
Chand said: "We are bringing in players to build through the middle, the heart of the team and who will improve it.
"It's all about stabilising ourselves in this league and then next season we want to be finishing in the top six or higher if that is possible."
The management team are also clear on the type of players they want at the Abbey Lawn.
Chand said: "We want players who are here for the football, the training and the atmosphere. The type of players who love the game above everything else and want to give their all.
"Too often at this level players are in it for the money they can earn – we are not interested in that."
Chand also highlighted the importance of bringing through players who are already at the club and ensuring they do not go elsewhere.
He said: "We have got several very exciting youngsters and by holding joint training sessions we are aiming to nurture those players and ensure they reach their potential so they can play at the top level here and then go on to even bigger and better things."
As well as the Boston friendly the Wakes have matches lined up against Wivenhoe and Mablethorpe as they increase the work-rate in the build up to the season.
Chand added: "When we kick off in our first league game we don't want any excuses – everyone will be ready and raring to go."
