Angling: Hilary wins second national title

RUTLAND fly fisher Hilary Tomlinson won the England Ladies Fly Fishing National at Grafham Water.

It was the second time in three years that Hilary had won the event.

She caught five fish on a clear but blustery day. Hilary was first with five fish for 10lb 8oz; second was Martha Thomson with three fish for 8lb 12oz and third was Sue Shaw with two fish for 8lb. All will represent England in next year’s international competition in Ireland.

Hilary also took a cracking conditioned 4lb 12½oz rainbow at Rutland Water.

l Kingsland large carp lake near Turves was the venue for Deeping St James AC’s Kevin Burkitt Memorial Trophy match held on Sunday.

The previous night’s frost made conditions hard on the day but with a back wind and full sun it made for a pleasant day.

The winner on the day was Ray Torrington on peg five who had a few early fish on soft pellet over micro pellet at full depth but then found the rest of the match hard going before taking a bonus ghost carp of 12lb 13oz from the bottom of the margin shelf on meat, this pushed him in to a clear lead to finish on 22lb 8oz.

In second place from peg seven was Graham Money who also had some better fish from the margin to finish with 18lb 9oz and was closely followed by Jon Bowland with 18lb 2oz.

This was their last match on commercials before the club starts its river matches with Sunday’s being a sweepstake on their own stretch of the River Nene at Wansford.

Deeping St James AC: Kevin Burkitt Memorial Trophy. Kingsland Fishery, Turves. Sun,10. Ray Torrington (DSJAC) 22-8-0 Carp to 12-13-0 pellet/meat. Graham Money (NJAC) 18-9-0; Jon Boland (NJAC) 18-2-0.
