Triathletes fly the flag for Stamford
There was strong Stamford representation at the ITU World Championships in New Zealand on Sunday.
Sara Mickleburgh and Kerry Rough represented Stamford Tri Club at the event in Auckland with Sara competing in the 20-24 age group and Kerry Rough in the 25-29.
The race began with a 1,500m sea swim in strong currents and 3m swells. That stage was followed by a 40k bike stage over hilly terrain and the final leg was 10k run.
The weather deteriorated throughout the race but both said they loved the event. Sara finished in 3hr 8min in 57th place and Kerry was fractionally quicker clocking 3hr 4min to take 74th place in her age group.
Former Stamford girl Catherine Faux took silver in the 25-29 division at the Ironman World Championships held in Hawaii a week earlier.
Catherine, currently a student at Sheffield, completed the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile marathon in a time of 9hr 53min and was the fastest British female athlete in her age group.
She qualified for Kona by winning the Ironman South Africa race earlier in the year, adding that title to the Outlaw Iron, and ITU World and ETU European Championships titles for middle distance in the past 18 months.
