Wakerley and Barrowden suffered an agonising one-run defeat at Market Deeping in a thrilling match in division 6 of the Rutland League on Sunday.

Deeping batted first with Sam Hodson making an early breakthrough, bowling Pateman for a single.

Nick and Karl Green put on 50 for the second wicket before both fell in consecutive deliveries from Jonny White and the hosts were finally all out for 170 with Dale Howkins finishing with 4 for 34 and Bob White 2 for 4.

Barrowden’s reply got off to a good start with Steve Chivers and Jonny White reaching 53 before White was bowled on 36. Howkins went for a duck in the same over and Chivers followed him to the pavilion for 28 as Barrowden faltered at 82 for 3.

Barrowden edged closer to their target, but Wright went lbw for 3 and Sewell was bowled for 2 as the nerves began to kick in.

With two runs needed for victory, White got a loose delivery from Rose but found Smith at point, and when Ryan Packer was bowled by the same bowler, Deeping had clinched the narrowest of wins with Barrowden all out for 169.

This was Barrowden’s first defeat in seven league matches but they still lead third-placed Deeping by 10 points.
