Big chill breaks Valentine hearts

SEVERE weather over the weekend meant that the Stamford Striders St Valentine’s Day 30k race had to be cancelled for the first time in its 19 year history.

Although much of the route was clear and fit for running by Saturday, there were two miles of compacted snow between Careby and Pickworth, which were frozen hard by the extreme low temperature on Friday night. As a result organisers of the race felt the course would be unsafe for running.

The Striders mobilised 30 volunteers who worked hard to try and hand clear the area of snow and ice, but at 4pm on Saturday, with the temperatures dipping back below freezing, they had to admit defeat.

Race Director Nick Wells said: “We were very disappointed to have to call off the 30k, despite the fantastic efforts of the Striders to clear the course.

“We would like to thank all the runners who come back year after year, as well as all those who give time aiding and assisting us, particularly Queen Eleanor School, Stamford Police, Sweets and Treats and Rutland Rescue Services.”

Nick hands over the role of Race Director to Stamford Strider Becca Brown for next year’s 30k.
