BOXING: Butlin stopped in the seventh
RUTLAND boxer Paul Butlin put in a gutsy performance but was stopped in seven rounds by a world champion contender.
In front of more than 61,000 fans at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen - fighting on the undercard of Wladimir Klitschko's world heavyweight title battle with Ruslan Chagaev - Butlin lost to American Johnathon Banks.
Oakham-born Butlin, who only had two weeks to prepare, came out throwing big shots but was knocked down in the first round. He battled on bravely but was stopped in the seventh round.
His opponent Banks lost a challenge to cruiserweight champion of the world Tomasz Adamek in February and boasts a record of 21 wins in 22 fights.
Butlin slips to 12 wins and 10 defeats and it was his fifth successive loss.
